Sister Twisters Twist Together

There were never such devoted twisters! Over 25 years after Twister twirled its way into moviegoers’ hearts, Universal Pictures and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment have a new “big scale” sequel called Twisters. How big? Well, we’re talking twin twisters twisting together. Minari director Lee Isaac Chung directed the film, and Deadline reports “Spielberg himself flipped for the script by The Revenant scribe Mark L. Smith, and his enthusiasm provided the impetus for the fast-tracked film.” The press tour kicked off at Cinemacon 2024 in April with an inflatable cow and wind effects, giving some real William Castle vibes to the promotion. Now the only thing left for them to do is to bring back Twister … Ride It Out. But in the meantime, here’s everything we know about those sister Twisters.

A super-trailer with twists and turns

“We got twins!” Anthony Ramos shouts in the new trailer, like a surprised OB/GYN. “Twins!” Then, Daisy Edgar-Jones takes a moment and says forebodingly, “They’re combining.” Sorry, but if twin twisters maximizing their joint slay by becoming a massive super-tornado didn’t sell you on this movie, then what will? The thrust of the film appears to be city slicker Edgar-Jones and hometown hero Glen Powell taking on a natural disaster, like if Sweet Home Alabama was remixed with Volcano. We’re so there.

Who’s getting twisted?

Edgar-Jones and Powell are leading the cast as Kate Cooper and Tyler Owens, who are two storm chasers who “try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.” Joining them for the thrills are In The Heights’s Ramos, Maura Tierney, supernatural expert Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Sasha Lane, Kiernan Shipka, and Nik Dodani.

What’s the deal with the storm?

Cooper is a former storm chaser who gets called by Javi (Ramos) to “test a groundbreaking new tracking system.” She meets Owens, a storm-chasing social-media influencer, where they end up “squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma.”

How silly is the press tour?

Twisters is not taking itself too seriously during the press tour. At Cinemacon 2024, Ramos came through with an inflatable cow as his press partner. Onstage, a fan blew fake leaves in Powell’s face, mimicking the faux nature with which he had to contend while shooting.

And if that weren’t goofy enough, Twisters is bringing back those fake cyclone things that used to haunt dying malls. You remember those, right? They were also in science museums’ gift stores. Fans can take a selfie in the eye of a tornado, if that’s the sort of thing you’re into.

When is it hitting?

Brace yourself on July 19.
