Magic Mike XXL heated up movie screens across the country over the weekend, and audiences can’t seem to get enough of Channing Tatum’s seriously impressive dance moves. One particular clip of Tatum promoting the film with some fierce vogue dancing has become especially meme-worthy, setting the internet ablaze with a GIF that proves he can werk with the best of them. Vogue emerged from the Harlem ballroom scene of the ’60s, where dancers would imitate dramatic modeling poses plucked from the pages of Vogue Magazine. By the early ’80s a robust vogue ball scene had developed in New York, and close-knit LGBT dance collectives known as “houses” would compete in a variety of performance categories. Vogue culture achieved significant visibility in the early ’90s — Madonna’s iconic hit “Vogue” topped the charts in 1990, and in 1991 the NYC vogue ball scene was immortalized in the seminal documentary Paris is Burning. Since then numerous musicians and dancers have incorporated the style into their performances, including the dance troupe Vogue Evolution, which competed on Season 4 of America’s Best Dance Crew.
