Magic Mike XXL heated up movie screens across the country over the weekend, and audiences can’t seem to get enough of Channing Tatum’s seriously impressive dance moves. One particular clip of Tatum promoting the film with some fierce vogue dancing has become especially meme-worthy, setting the internet ablaze with a GIF that proves he can werk with the best of them. Check out Tatum’s skills below to get a taste, and read on for our beginner’s guide to vogue dancing.

History of Vogueing Vogue Channing Tatum dancing

Vogue emerged from the Harlem ballroom scene of the ’60s, where dancers would imitate dramatic modeling poses plucked from the pages of Vogue Magazine. By the early ’80s a robust vogue ball scene had developed in New York, and close-knit LGBT dance collectives known as “houses” would compete in a variety of performance categories. Vogue culture achieved significant visibility in the early ’90s — Madonna’s iconic hit “Vogue” topped the charts in 1990, and in 1991 the NYC vogue ball scene was immortalized in the seminal documentary Paris is Burning. Since then numerous musicians and dancers have incorporated the style into their performances, including the dance troupe Vogue Evolution, which competed on Season 4 of America’s Best Dance Crew.

Now that you’re ready to slay at the ball with your knowledge of vogue history, get out of your seat and vogue with these dance-worthy artists on tour.

Janet Jackson — Miss Jackson was busting out vogue-inspired choreography as early as 1989’s epic “Rhythm Nation” video, and she’ll continue to let fans have it on her 2015 Unbreakable Tour.

Madonna — The Material Girl has done as much to popularize vogueing as anyone, and she’ll remain at the vanguard of cutting-edge trends on her 2015 Rebel Heart Tour.

Rolling Stones — It’s not technically vogueing, but Mick Jagger does serve serious face and attitude as he struts his stuff on stage for the 2015 ZIP CODE Tour.

Nicki Minaj — Nicki’s fierce beats, rapid-fire flow, and uncompromising point of view have made her a favorite in the vogue community. See her drop the bass at a stadium near you on her 2015 Pinkprint Tour.

Budweiser Made in America Festival — There are plenty of vogue-worthy artists headlining this year’s Made in America Festival in Philadelphia, from divas like Beyonce and Santigold to EDM heavyweights like A-Trak, Claude VonStroke, and GTA.

Chris Brown — The R&B bad boy showcased vogueing in his video for “Kiss Kiss”, and he’ll bring his own razor sharp moves to the stage on his 2015 One Hell of a Nite Tour.

Ariana Grande — Divas hold a special place in vogue culture, and Miss Grande — a budding diva in her own right — is no exception. Don’t miss her at her upcoming tour dates, where she’ll be joined by up-and-coming rapper Prince Royce.

Britney Spears — Britney explored the wild world of vogueing in her 2009 video for “If You Seek Amy”, and her acclaimed Piece of Me residency at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas follows suit with plenty of fierce choreography.
