Ah, stock footage. It’s so easy to manipulate the meaning behind a clip sold to fill out videos with the right editing and audio tracks behind them. Case and point is the music video for Thou’s new single “Unbidden Guest,” which shows the same beautiful people you’d see in some two-bit advertisement reacting to footage of Thou’s live show.
As for the song itself, it’s loud, brash, and furious. You know, pretty much what you’d expect from the band. It’s also the second single off of the band’s forthcoming new album Umbilical, due out May 31 via Sacred Bones. The new album is the band’s first non-collaborative effort since their 2019 album Magus and is packed with 10 new tracks.
Vocalist Bryan Funck explains the thought process behind the track:
“Physical deterioration by way of psychological disarray. Retreading a well-worn path of self grievance. Othering mental illness and learned behaviour in order to crush them under the dominance of epistemic willpower. ‘The last time you cried, who’d you think was inside?'”
